Sutton was born on the 9th of May in 1836 in Dooly County, Georgia. He was the son of Andrew Jackson Sutton and Sarah Ann Ross. After Missouri died in 1898, Joseph Z. Sutton remarried, his second wife’s name was Gracie Henderson and they were married on the 9th of October in 1899.
