
Gordon Archibald Sumner was born on the 27th of April 1814 in Emanuel County, Georgia, the oldest child of Joseph Chestnutt Sumner Jr. and Mahala Smith.
Through the years
Gordon Archibald Sumner married Rachel Marchant cir. 1838, they made their home near Isabella in what was the first county site of Worth, San Barnard, it was also Georgia’s first summer resort. His wife, Rachel Marchant Sumner was born the 20th of January 1812 to Isaac and Rachel Marchant. He and his good wife kept the inn. He was the founder of the school at that place. He furnished the house, boarded the teacher free of charge and paid tuition for his own children. When the new county of Worth was organized, he gave 50 acres of land for the county site of Isabella, reserving one acre in the center for the Court House. He served in the Confederate Army as 3rd Corporal, Company F, 10th Regiment, Georgia Militia.
Death
Gordon Archibald Sumner died on the 6th of July 1870 in Worth County, Georgia and is buried in the Isabella Cemetery, in Sylvester, Worth County, Georgia. His wife, Rachel Marchant Sumner died on the 14th of August 1889 and is buried next to her husband.
