Barnes and Buzbee Cemetery
Caroline Laney was born cir. 1827 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina to John Evan Laney, b. 1795 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina and Leah Secrest, 1795 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina and died 1866. Caroline was one of 10 children. Other children of John Evan Laney and Leah Secrest were John Postelle Laney, b. 1822 in Georgia; Rebecca S. Laney, b. 26 Jan 1828 in Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina; Zachariah William Laney, b. 29 Jan 1829; Emmaline Laney, b. 1832 in North Carolina; Susan Laney, b. 1834 in Georgia; James Monroe Laney, b. 12 Jan 1836 in Georgia; Charles B. Laney, b. 1839 in Georgia; John T. Laney, b. 1842 in Georgia; and Mary W. Laney, b. 1845 in Georgia. Lawrence and Caroline Buzbee are found living next to Caroline’s parents in 1850 Dale County, Alabama.
Marriage and Family
Caroline and Rebecca S. Laney married the Buzbee brothers, Lawrence and Oliver Henry. Both couples were married in Dale County, Alabama. It is speculated that the couples had a double wedding. Both families migrated to the Hillsborough County, Florida area shortly before 1870. Lawrence Buzbee and Caroline Laney had 8 children.
Death and Burial
Caroline died 10 Nov 1887 in Hillsborough County, Florida and was buried in the Buzbee & Barnes Cemetery. This cemetery is now gone, efforts to locate this cemetery in earlier years, turned up a few broken headstones and not much else. It is said that the cemetery was plowed under to make room for an orange grove and there is no record that any of the remains were removed and buried else where. Despite the fact that she had an impressive headstone, nothing remains of it.
