
Joseph Sumner Sr. was one of Georgia’s Revolutionary soldiers, he drew land twice in Emanuel County for service in the Revolutionary War. The last draw was in 1827 shortly before his death in 1827. Joseph Sumner Sr. was born cir 1761 in either Edgecomb or Onslow County, North Carolina. He is possibly the son of John Sumner and Ann Duke.
Joseph Sumner Sr. married Mary Kight, the daughter of Robert Kight and Bethany Merritt sometime before 1787 in North Carolina. He was a Revolutionary War Veteran and is found in a certified roster of Revolutionary soldiers of Georgia in Knight’s roster, page 369, “Joseph Sumner, 1827 Lottery, Emanuel County, Georgia” reprint of land lottery, 1827, published 1828, page 107. Joseph Sumner Sr, Revolutionary soldier of Swains District, Emanuel County, drew Lot # 10, Section 3. Drew land twice. Joseph and Mary Sumner with their children, Mary Sumner Land, Joseph Sumner Jr, Jesse C. Sumner and first cousin William Sumner (son of Richard Sumner) moved to Irwin County, Georgia. The other children remained in Emanuel County, Georgia. Joseph Sumner Sr. moved to Georgia with his brother Richard in the mid-1780’s from Onslow County, North Carolina.
Death and Burial
Joseph Sumner died on the 30th of December 1827 in Emanuel County, Georgia and is buried in the Sumner-Flanders Cemetery in Emanuel County, Georgia. Mary Kight Sumner died sometime between 1830 and 1840 and is also buried in the Sumner-Flanders Cemetery.
